Xmas Lifetimes

by Betty (Kirby) Erwin

Our 50th Aniversary!
What I have done the last 50 years

Time once again to decorate our Christmas tree
Climb up high
To reach the shelves
Where ornaments and tinsel were
Stored by last year's Christmas elves.

Place the tree in the stand
Now step back - Look! Isn't it grand?
So straight and tall.
Sort out the winkling lights and wrap
them all around.
Check to see they are all aglow
Red, green, yellow, and blue, twinkling in a row.
Now comes the popcorn string, drape it all around, the candy
string from Santa's candy land,
The cranberries last at the top for color and style.

Now the tree balls so shiny all aglow.
We take them out one by one
And place them just so--
Memories that abound with each shiny ball-
almost make the tears flow-

Remember, Remember.
Our first tree together, My very own first tree, I thought
it so
pretty,
and you laughed at the skinny little thing,
Very few decorations on a dollar tree
With icicles to make it glitter.
Presents were few, only a radio
We could enjoy together,
We did for many years.

Christmas in Florida - a few
New Christmas balls - a
New package icicles and a larger tree -
Christmas dinner with our landlord -
Thank Heaven's
As a real Christmas dinner was beyond our means.

Christmas in Tripoli, Libya
A "real" tree at last.
Five feet tall and loaded with lights and balls
and candy canes, surrounded by gifts
both large and small.
Three Christmases we spent
Enjoying our time and feeding the single troops.
Until they were stuffed to the ears with,
Pies and cakes, stuffed turkey and dressing
And alas no leftovers to save.

Each new Christmas we added
A few new shiny balls -
Presents food and joys
but we sure began to wonder when Santa would
Leave us some TOYS!

Christmas comes but you are gone
So Santa waits for your return.
Wake up! Waake Up! Santa's come here
Look what he has left -
Why its dolls and blocks a new little dress and SOX!
Hey! - NOW the fun begins.

OH! My goodness. Gracious me.
Now look what's under our tree.
Dolls and dresses, cars and trains,
balls and keys that rattle and things.
Toys and joys for our two little girls
They're cute as buttons with their curls.

Tree time again, and ceremony begins.
Helpers, two, to decorate.
Why are all the icicles on the bottom?
Thetas were each tiny hand
Can reach to place them.
Dolls and buggies, tables and chairs
Smoking jacket and fancy dress
Yes, Christmas in Michigan
Cold and wet
Was this as good as life could get?

Michigan Christmas once again _
Cold and lonely - Daddys gone.
My babies and I celebrate alone.
Daddys in Texas and misses so -
Goes home to Albuquerque to celebrate
Christmas with his Mom and Dad
First time since he was nineteen.

Now we are all together once again
Schools over for Daddy and we
Find an Arizona Christmas
Suits us just fine!
New tree new ornaments and old,
Light on the house
Candles on the window sill.

Toys to put together and
Can you believe this weather?
Warm and sunny - it isn't funny
How can Santa's sleigh run
When there's only sun???

Santa's magic - Wake and see
There are toys under our Christmas tree.

The growing years run together
One by one - remember
Each and every one - Happy days,
golden days. FUN FUN FUN.

Christmas comes - tree time again.
See those angels, white, red and green
Hung by three very lonesome
Girls who miss their man - because
He's celebrating Christmas in
Viet Nam.

An English Christmas - oh what fun,
Our Santa's turned into Father Christmas,
The tree, the lights the special cheer.
Yes, Christmas IS wonderful this year.
We are all together with the loved ones dear,
Father Christmas is good this year.

A few more Christmasses in England we spend.
Then its "home" to Arizona once again.

The babies are grown
And the toys disappear.
Now its dresses and boots, 10-speed bikes
Record players and designer labels.
And diamond earrings.
The tree gets more decorations
and so do the walls and the shopping is done in the crowded
Malls.

Christmas trees all aglow
two more faces that light the show -
Wedding bells chime in the end of the year
1980 is here.

Christmas once again - Where in the world have we been?
A trip to Australia to celebrate our 30th year
Home in time to start anew,
toys under our Christmas tree
grandchildren, Quite a few.

Another Christmas, another wedding
July was the month but a First Christmas once again
Of bells and balls, lights and trees
And what's this? MORE grandchildren.

Christmas trees all aglow
and we are back where we began,
With Christmas balls hung on the tree
Filled as stocking with memories too, you'll agree
Makes it special for you and me!

Forty-nine Christmases
Each better than the last
Does life get better
OR just get fast?
